Exercises That Boost Metabolism
My attempt at losing weight since I have turned 40 is not going as well as planned. In my younger years I could just hit the gym hard and slim down pretty quickly, but that is no longer the case. I kept hearing my older friends say “Oh just wait until you reach 40, your metabolism slows down and everything changes”. I’ll admit I didn’t believe them or at least I didn’t think it would be that drastic and I figured if I kept on doing what I am doing I should be fine. Well I was wrong, I kid you not it seems like the day I turned 40 my body decided it was done and my metabolism took a long hiatus. How my body reacted to stress and anxiety changed, that little thing called cortisol or the stress hormone increased in production and I started noticing belly fat! This was always the part of me I could count on to lose weight the quickest and was decent looking. It was extremely frustrating and I kept getting lectured from trainer friends and my Physical Therapist that my body is different and I couldn’t expect it to bounce back like it used to. So I have finally decided to take their advice and realized I need to change the way I exercise to get better results and find ways to speed up metabolism after 40, but what exactly should I do?
HIIT Training At Home
A personal trainer friend of mine told me that a great cardio choice to speed up metabolism is High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT training. HIIT training is basically the opposite of a long cardio workout, you perform short burst workouts that push your body out of its comfort zone followed by and active recover or rest period. The bonus about HIIT training exercises are that they are short, can be done at home and are very effective at boosting your metabolism and burning fat. I was told you should not do HIIT workouts every day as overdoing it can lead to injury as well as the result becoming less effective. It is extremely important that if you do chose to add HIIT training exercises to your routine that you make sure you rest your body so it is able to recover properly. There are a number of HIIT training workout routines that you can do from home. If you are a beginner to HIIT training a good DVD program to start with is, IGNITE by SPRI 900 Calorie Burn. Included are 4 workouts that are each 25 minutes long. They are a great introduction to how HIIT training is done and will also give you a good calorie burn. For those of you a little more advanced my personal favorite are ShaunTs INSANITY, FOCUS T25 and INSANITY MAX 30 HIIT workout routines. Over the years I have done all 3 of these off and on, and nothing has given me better results. These are my go to workout programs whenever I need to lose weight. FOCUS T25 and MAX 30 are much sorter in length than the original INSANITY program. The workouts are 25 minutes and 30 minute respectively, compared to INSANITY’s 45 minutes to 60 minutes. If you stick with either of these programs, I promise that you WILL sweat, tone up, burn a lot of calories and lose that tummy you want to get rid of.
Home Strength Training Exercises
It was difficult for me to do, but I finally gave in and incorporated strength training into my workout. I wanted to get my long cardio workouts done and get that cardio high everyday like I used to, but was told at my age and weight it was doing more harm than good. Strength training is important for women especially as we get older, as it increases our muscle size and can improve our bone density. Adding muscle to your body increases your metabolism which is what I need. There are different ways you can do strength training using body weight training, dumbbell training and barbell training. I am sure these are pretty self-explanatory to most but for those that do not know, body weight training is where you use your own body weight when performing the moves. In the following paragraph I list a great new device for strength training using body weight. This is a good option for people who are traveling because you do not need any equipment. Dumbbell and Barbell training is where you incorporate various amounts of weight to the exercises you are performing to build muscle and burn fat. A good in home strength training routine is Beachbody’s P90X DVD program. P90X contains 12 diverse workouts that use muscle confusion to get you a lean and stronger body.
